Asthma is characterized by narrowing of lung airways (bronchi) and excessive production of mucus secretions in the airways. It makes respiration difficult and a feeling of breathlessness and suffocation in chest is felt by the sufferer.
Types of Asthma
There are two types of Asthma;
1. Bronchial Asthma - So called because the trouble occurs in the bronchi
2. Cardiac Asthma - Here the basic problem lies in the heart and breathlessness is due to heart failure.
The asthma that is normally talked about is bronchial asthma and we shall deal only with this in the present chapter.
